Getting started in kitesurf, some tips to know
Would you like to try kitesurfing during your holidays in Hyères (excellent choice) or elsewhere? Here are a few tips on how to get started in this sport, which is both intense and cool. It is true that it is better to have already practised snowboarding or surfing to progress more quickly, but this is not obligatory. With a good teacher and the desire to practice, kitesurfing can be mastered. Ready to go? Let’s go.
Before you start
The first and most important step is to contact a recognised kitesurf school in Hyères or in the town where you want to practice. There you will find professionals who will be able to guide you. There is no point in trying to learn alone. It is a guaranteed failure.
The practice requires, indeed, specific knowledge. Moreover, it is a sport that can be dangerous. It is therefore essential to know the safety rules to protect yourself and others.
Another step that you cannot avoid is the purchase of your equipment. Did you think you could rent it? Of course, this is always possible, but it must be admitted that shops offering this service are still rare. And if you want to practice regularly, it is better to invest.
To get the right equipment, you need to buy different materials. First of all, the board. Beginners should choose a wide board that will allow them to progress more easily. One main criterion should be taken into account: your weight. This information will allow you to choose the width and length of the board that suits you. Prefer boards with two or three sails, and if your budget allows it, choose sails with a “one-pump” system. This way you can easily inflate the sail.
When kitesurfing, one thing is inevitable: falls. To avoid having to search for your board, you can use a leash with a roller. There are also simple ones, but they can be a nuisance when you move.
Other parts are very useful for your safety. Harnesses, helmets and life jackets should be included in your purchases.
Finally, don’t forget the wetsuit.

Steps to get started
You are now equipped. Now it’s time to really learn to kitesurf.
Kitesurfing is not improvised. It is, indeed, essential to know the elements in which you will evolve. Starting with the water, of course (are there any obstacles?), but also the wind. You will have to quickly determine where it comes from and its strength.
You will then have to prepare your equipment. It is necessary to know how to mount your kite perfectly to avoid accidents. You also need to master the safety features of your kite.
Handling your kite is the other important step. You will start with the help of an instructor who will show you how to launch the kite and how to land it. Your instructor will also show you (and teach you) how to manage your kite, fly it, control the traction…
Once you have mastered this step, you will be able to access the subtleties of the waterstart. Knowing how to adjust the footstraps is the first thing you will learn. Knowing how to control the stability of the kite is the next step. Then you will be taught how to put the board on. Then comes the time when you learn to lift your kite and then slide. But it’s not over yet!
You will have to learn to get your bearings. This will make it easier for you to steer in the right direction (which is very useful after all!).
Gliding without problems
You have the board in hand and now want to get out on the water? Let’s get on with your initiation.
In order to practice properly, you will need to determine which side you are most comfortable on. To find out, no mystery, you’ll have to try and practice! You will also have to find your support and finally work on the upwind.
All this is done with your instructor. Then comes the time to become autonomous in kitesurfing.
When you have mastered the upwind on both sides, it is time to go it alone (or almost). This is the time to go out to sea and discover new spots. You will learn how to do half-turns, jumps and go into the waves.
You will also have to respect the rules of priority in order to sail with other surfers without risk and in good understanding.
Are you starting to master your kite? That’s fine. But never forget to ask for the necessary information when you arrive on a new spot. Ask questions to the riders who are already there or ask at the local kitesurfing schools. This is also one thing you need to know to practice well: stay humble.
